My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem - It's almost impossible to believe that there was a time when women couldn't vote, attend college, work in certain professions and join the military; I remember when we had to wear skirts or dresses to school, and the year where we could wear "culottes", then the next year when we could wear pants not jeans, and then finally the year where, yes, we could wear jeans, because what did what we wore really have to do with what or how we learned? If not for Gloria Steinem and women like her who broke down and continue to break down the barriers to our continued success, women might still be on the sidelines. Gloria is an amazing woman with a beautiful heart, intelligent mind and a gift for words. She tells of herunusual childhoodas the source of her wandering nature and innate curiosity. Her writing is easy and personal, she constantly meets new people, listening to them and learning from them. Thank you Gloria, I didn't do you justice.
A Girl's Guide to Moving On by Debbie Macomber - And then we have this sweet novel about a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law who find themselves figuring out a second chance life. It's chick lit lite with religious undertones. Everyone can turn it around if they open their hearts and minds to those they love and those new into their lives. Spotlight- This movie received the Oscar for Best Film in 2015, and it was better than most of the other nominees. However, this was a very preachy year for movies, and although the story was good and the acting was good, was it really a new story? (Does it have to be?) As a rule, newsroom movies look the same, so there has to be something more to elevate it to the top of the heap. It's a good movie about the back story to the big story; a case where for years the story was buried, and now it's unearthed. It starts with one person who has to convince a group to act - against the bullies and for the greater good.
Her Heart On Her Sleeve: I live in a suburb north of Chicago, and I read, bead, make jewelry, sew, watch TV and movies, crochet, craft, decorate, go to house and garage sales, walk and go on beach walks, listen to music, take pictures, cook and bake, read, and write about all of it on herheartonhersleeve. I have a companion blog called Jewlery by Dianne Sophia at diannesophia.blogspot.com where I write exclusively about my jewelry.
Jewelry By Dianne Sophia: I have been collecting vintage jewelry since I was a girl growing up in Detroit, and have been designing and making jewelry for 15 years. I love to work with pearls and crystals, semi-precious stones, Sterling Silver and Gold, along with vintage beads and materials. I delight in combining shape, pattern and color in new ways. I'm inspired and influenced by my travels and experiences as a reader, writer, photographer and student of life. My blog herheartonhersleeve.blogspot.com chronicles my life in art and popular culture.
