CLAIRE OF THE SEA LIGHT

Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat - The best of both genres.  I love short stories and long stories, and this book is both - an entire work about a place on a tropical island and the people who live at the beach, and in the town, the poor people and the people of means.  At the same time, each chapter stands as its own story.  In the end, you've met people of all ages, been in their heads and lived in their shoes.  Themes of life and death and superstition abound, and the patois is lovely and adds a special richness to the words wherever it appears.  This is the Wilmette Public Library's One Book this year, and the author is coming for a visit in the spring.  Wonderful choice.
