DIVERGENT * A WHISTLING WOMAN * THE COMEBACK

Divergent - Steve and I enjoyed this distopian fantasy movie about Triss, a girl who is too smart for her world, and therefore a threat to the powers that be. It was very easy to follow, although I had the feeling that the book is probably deeper in terms of all the characters and events.  It's a great movie.

A Whistling Woman by Louise Shivers - Just read this novel in a flash. It's not that I couldn't put it down as much as I wanted to know the outcome of my worrying that something dark was hovering over the characters in a way similar to Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail. It added to the tension though, and not to worry, these are two very different stories - each special in its own way. The Comeback - I just watched the season finale of this quirky HBO show starring Lisa Kudrow. She plays Valerie Cherish, a washed up 1980s sit com actress now making a reality show which turns out to be the chronicling of her comeback in a new HBO show. So it's sort of a show within a show within a show. I think. It's been really memorable this season - in fact if this was the second season, and I think it was, I don't remember anything about the storyline of the first season. Might have to go back to watch that one.

THE WEDDING DRESS * HERE TO GET MY BABY OUT OF JAIL * EYES OF EMERALD * SOMEDAY SOMEDAY MAYBE

The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck - A wedding dress from 1912 turns up in the strangest ways and seems to possess mysterious characteristics. The dress is the constant thread in a tale spanning a hundred years and four brides. The brides are different shapes and sizes and yet the dress always fits perfectly with no alterations. It's an enjoyable story - perfect to read during busy times when you want to be able to put a book down, and then look forward to picking it back up.

Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail by Louise Shivers - Roxy tells this story about her life in a small eastern North Carolina town and what happened when a guy named Jack Ruffin moved there one day during the depression in 1937. I love the title which is lifted from a song from those times, and the story itself is short and different, but not always easy.

Eyes of Emerald by Harvey Stelman and Andy Nathan - Eyes of Emerald is really good; if you can track it down, read it. It's a self published book based on a true story that Harvey Stelman heard his dad tell about a beautiful cousin and what happened to her in the 1930s. Her name was Esther, and she had the most beautiful emerald eyes, and her story comes alive on the pages of this wonderful book.

Someday Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham - A struggling New York actress doesn't see herself as others do - will she make it in the business and in life? Sweet but not engrossing.  Actually that was a theme through all these books, except Eyes of Emerald where Esther knew her mind. The woman doesn't see herself as honestly attractive or worthy, so she has problems when it comes to love and finding a man. It gets annoying - I'll have to read one of those books about a confident heroine or one of those stories where looks don't come into play as much because the events are driving the story more than the main character's insecurities. Good Hair - This Chris Rock documentary is an engrossing eye into the world of black womens' hair. The Good Hair documentary is all about what it takes to get smooth straight hair ("good hair") from curly curly hair. And it takes an effort to accomplish - of time, of product, of beauticians, of beauty shows, and of women of all ages who go after that good hair.
